The star has handed over the entirety of his twenty-five thousand pound Mercury Prize cash to the trust for venues, which functions to save the UK's independent music venues.

He was given the prize on 16 October as his new release the album was declared the top album of the last 12 months.

The musician has opted to hand the money over to the MVT, in appreciation of the vital role grassroots venues fulfilled in his beginning days.

"As an artist would not have achieved what I am doing today if it wasn't for all the performances I did around the North East, and elsewhere, when I was just getting going," stated Fender. "These locations are legendary, but they are facing challenges."

Since the start of 2023, over 150 of these locations have ceased operations – about one-sixth of the whole industry in the UK.

In the last year, well-known musicians such as Pulp, the group Coldplay, the singer Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all backed the trust in its initiatives to help venues survive, by adding a minor surcharge to their admission fees, which supports local stages.

He also took part, collecting over £100k on his recent tour to assist 38 small stages across Britain.

The money assisted spaces that were confronting possible closure due to difficulties arising from floods, fires and personal losses, as well as regulatory hurdles, conflicts and neighbor objections.

Some locations received financial assistance in upgrading facilities and sound and lighting systems that directly benefitted performers and fans.

"The idea that revenue from concerts in large arenas backs the smaller venues, where it all starts for performers like me, is just sensible," Sam Fender has stated.

They are one example who gave their Mercury Prize funds to good causes

The musician is far from the only musician to donate his honor funds to good deeds.

Back when the band won the trophy in the mid-90s for their album their work, frontman Cocker declared that the act would give their winnings to the organization the charity.

In 2002, rapper and singer she split her prize across a few good causes, such as the children's charity and a charity for Sickle Cell.

"And I donated a £1,000 to my local community centre, to their classes, because I practiced gymnastics when I was younger and they lacked better apparatus," Ms Dynamite shared with the media.

In recent years, they donated their prize money to the local youth club that developed their band, as well as other grassroots music organisations.

Also winners that year M People gave their winnings to a MS organization after a friend was identified with the illness.

"Receiving the award was sufficient," remarked artist Small. "The cash was the extra but we could do without the extra, because we had the cake. So our success affected another person's life."

In the past week, the Music Venues Trust revealed it had saved several grassroots venues in the South East, by transferring them to local control.

The Joiners in Southampton and the other in the city were purchased under the community ownership program, which is funded by the arts council and supporters who acquire "shares" in the properties.
